Welfare of Horses

The main objectives of the Arabian Horse Society of Australia Ltd are the welfare of horses in Australia and maintaining the Studbook for Arabian and Arabian bred horses. Registration of horses is important in that registered horses are much more likely to end up in a situation that promotes well-being. Records are maintained and transfers of ownership registered and this is essential in trying to keep track of the location of animals should a welfare issue occur. The Arabian is the historical ancestor of all of the other light horse breeds, including the Thoroughbred, and so almost all horses in Australia are considered to be Arabian bred.

The Society is in regular communication with animal welfare groups such as RSPCA and Horse Rescue as, unfortunately, Arabian horses are not excluded from abuse. If any AHSA Member is convicted of animal mistreatment their membership status is revoked.  The Society is also concerned about the horrific abuse of Endurance horses in UAE and is assisting in ensuring that this situation does not occur in Australia.
